Roche unveils new home for its Institute of Human Biology in Basel

Roche has inaugurated the new research home for its Institute of Human Biology in Basel, deepening its commitment to the region with another major investment in the Basel Area’s life sciences ecosystem.

The new facility, Building 92 by architechts Herzog & deMeuron brings together up to 250 researchers in a collaborative environment designed to connect fundamental science with pharmaceutical application. According to Roche, the institute focuses on pioneering next-generation human model systems, including organoids, organ-on-chip technologies and in silico models, to better predict how new treatments may work in people.

The opening highlights the strengths that continue to set the Basel Area apart for life sciences companies: deep scientific expertise, strong multidisciplinary talent and the close proximity between world-class research and global industry.

"The new institute reinforces our commitment to Switzerland as a global innovation hub."

Why the Basel Area remains a global life sciences hub

For the Basel Area Life Sciences Supercluster, Roche’s inauguration of the new Institute of Human Biology is a strong signal of how it and the region more broadly support translational science that helps move ideas faster from discovery toward clinical application.

Roche said the new building is part of its broader CHF 1.4 billion site investment in Basel and Kaiseraugst. The company also noted that the Institute of Human Biology, founded in 2023, was created to unlock the potential of human model systems and help revolutionize the future of drug discovery and development. That combination of long-term corporate investment, advanced R&D infrastructure and scientific ambition is exactly what keeps the Basel Area at the forefront of global life sciences innovation.
